There are less than six months to go until Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's If/Then hits the Great White Way, and we're not gonna lie: We haven't been this excited since Next to Normal first premiered. And don’t even get us started on the star-studded cast! Broadway.com recently caught up with If/Then star LaChanze at the American Theatre Wing gala to chat about playing Kate, the next-door neighbor of Idina Menzel, in the brand new musical.
“Kate is not like any character I’ve ever played before,” the Tony winner says. “She really brings the humor, which I love. I get to laugh and make everyone laugh, which is so exciting for me.” Here’s something else to get excited about: If/Then isn’t exactly a traditional musical, LaChanze explains. “It’s a completely new concept, and a completely new way of thinking about how a musical is told,” she says. “It’s all about what happens if you make one choice and where that leads you, or if you made a different choice, what might happen.”
Set in New York City, If/Then is a “dramedy for grown-ups,” telling the story of Elizabeth (Menzel), a woman who wants to make a brand new start. LaChanze is thrilled to join Menzel, along with Broadway heavy hitters Anthony Rapp, Jenn Colella and Jerry Dixon (a pal since they co-starred in Once on This Island back in 1990) in the world premiere. “It’s funny, it’s moving, it’s entertaining, it’s passionate, it’s sexy,” she says. “We’re all just so excited to be a part of it.”
See LaChanze bring the funny as Kate in If/Then, beginning March 4, 2014 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre!
